Her father, Hekzebiah Hawkins was a prominent member of their town of Dogpatch and organized a day where the single women of the town would form a footrace and chase the single men of the town around until they were caught and married. Sadie Hawkins day later evolved into a day when school dances were held and girls were allowed to ask boys to the dance instead of waiting – as etiquette demanded – for boys to ask them.
