Remembering card games that have been passed down through the generations. Games such as Mille Bournes, Rook, Pit, Flinch and Oh Hell are still being sold.

Many of the card games that have been around since the beginning of the twentieth century are still popular today. Some of the graphics have been updated or a few more variations are available, but these games have proven themselves so well over the years that there really is no need to replace them.

Dutch Blitz

Manufactured by the Dutch Blitz Game Company, Dutch Blitz was invented by Werner Ernst George Muller, a German immigrant and optometrist living in Pennsylvania Dutch country who wanted to help his children learn about colors and numbers. In this friendly, family game players try to gather sets of cards out of the deck and to get rid of their Blitz pile as fast as they can. The deck consists of 160 brightly colored cards and instructions for two to four players, age 8 years and older.

Flinch

The Parker Brothers card game, Flinch, was invented in 1903. Each player has 10 cards in their stockpile and tries to get rid of them as fast as they can by playing them in numerical sequence into the piles in the center of the table. There are three decks of cards, numbered 1 through 15 and the instructions come with 5 variations of the game listed in illustrated rules. Played by one to either players, aged 7 years and older.

Mille Bournes

Made for two, three, four or six players, Mille Bournes by Hasbro is based on a French racing game called Touring. Players lay down mileage points as they race towards the 1000 mile goal while tripping up their competitors with stop lights, flat tires, speed limits and other hazards. Miles of fun can be had with this game for ages 8 years and older and has been a staple in family game closets for over 50 years. Each deck contains 115 cards and instructions. The Collector's Edition of Mille Bournes incorporates the charm of the original 1962 card artwork and contains a red car-shaped card tray. Mille Bournes is also available as the Mille Bournes board game and Mille Bournes online game.

Pit

Pit, by Winning Moves, is a game that tries to "Corner the Market". Players shout out their deal and trade cards to try and get all of the cards of one commodity. Once they have accomplished this, they slap the "Corner!" board and win the hand. Based on the "Pits" at the stock exchange. Each game consists of 74 cards, one "Corner!" board, a card tray and instructions. The deluxe version includes traditional card artwork and commodities as well as a silver bell. Pit Jr. is designed for younger players and includes such commodities as pizza, burgers, cookies, and veggies with 65 cards, one "Hit the Pit" board and instructions.

Oh Hell

Oh Hell, by University Games, was invented in the 1930s but is gaining popularity again. It incorporates skills from bridge, poker and hearts and combines them into a card game that is enjoyed three to four players, age 8 years and older. Players place bids and take tricks to earn their points. Each deck consists of 52 cards, four bidding wheels and instructions.

Rook

Hasbro's Rook trick-taking card game that incorporates intermediate skills that are also used in Bridge, Hearts and Pinochle. Players or teams predict how many tricks they can take and attempt to come closest to their number to earn points and hope that the Rook card doesn't change their game completely. The deluxe version includes artwork that is very similar to the original, with four bright and easy to read colors and the guidebook that is included along with 57 cards, details many popular Rook variations. The game can be played by two to six players, age 8 years and older.

Card games designed for two or more players help to bring people together and these games are not exception. Older generations can enjoy introducing their children and grandchildren to card games they played with their families decades ago while enjoying the fun and laughter of a new generation.
